Solstice Practice

The solstice time is a three-day period (June 19-21) when the veil is thinner between the spiritual and material world. This is a time when the sun's rays convey a little extra magic and any spiritual work will be more effective. Midsummer is usually a time when we have plenty of activities, so take time to give thanks for all that you have received.

This practice called the Sunflower Channel is an easy exercise that helps to balance the chakras, expand the aura, and give you a spiritual boost. It helps with intuition, connection, and protection. Try it in the morning or evening when you can let the sun gently illuminate your body.

To Begin: Sit in a comfortable posture with the eyes closed and take a few deep relaxing breaths in through the nose, and out through the mouth. Place your hands gently one on top of the other in your lap. The precise hand posture is not as important as following the breath.

Take a deep inhale while rising the hands up along the chakras and just slightly above the head. This is a slow, conscious movement. On the exhale flow the hands down the center of the body to the lap. On the next inhale bring the hands to the heart and exhale.

As you exhale keep the hands at the heart and imagine your heart growing light and surrounding your body. Inhale, bring the arms up towards the crown chakra, and exhale all the way down again.

Keep up this slow, deep breathing and envision light coming into all your chakras from the crown. This is said to open the crown like a sunflower to refresh and restore your whole system. Continue at least 11 times. End with your hands at the heart giving gratitude to the sun for light, life, joy, and inspiration.

Watermelon Cooler

In the summer it is important to stay cool and hydrated, getting your electrolytes helps in this process. Both coconut water and watermelon are high in electrolytes.

Place watermelon without seeds and coconut water in a blender. You could add a few sprigs of mint or slices of cucumber. It's that easy! Drink cold :) If you need more specific directions about preparing the watermelon:

I have been working on a yoga class series that invites us to move towards anandamaya kosha, the bliss body. In this series, we used yoga warm-ups to balance the luminous body and then did meditations for...
