Greetings for the July New Moon! In the heat of Summer, it is easy to be grateful for water as it cools and nurtures us in many ways. This beautiful element which sustains our life is also an incredible healer and teacher whose mysteries begin to unfold when we come into what is called sacred reciprocity in shamanism. Sacred reciprocity is the act of being in right relationship with nature through reverence and gratitude.
Water has memory and carries the essence of hope and renewal that can be deeply healing to the human heart. Read on to learn more and find some practices and media to deepen your relationship with the sacred life of water.
Honoring: To the Kogi tribe of Colombia, water is a sacred conduit of information to and from their creative deity, Aluna (the inspiration for Aluna Yoga). In this sacred relationship with water, one could hear the voice of the goddess guiding them. This facilitates the ability to act from wisdom and bring healing to self and nature.
They would speak about how water can be impacted by human emotion and how pollution outside is the reflection of our inner world and troubled minds. This is a common understanding in many earth cultures and is backed up scientifically. (see Secrets of Water video below).
The Kogi also say that "water is like a woman and if you do not treat her well she will go away...". This wisdom deeply affected me as I considered the many cultures that faced their ultimate decline due to misuse of resources. Our relationship with water can be as unique as each person, whether you consider water as inert or sentient it is essential to life and worthy of our attention.
In developing a relationship with water one can more easily access spiritual healing and begin to learn the wisdom in nature. In cultures throughout the world, water is revered as being divine and sacred, it is used in ceremonies and rites of initiation. This time of year is a wonderful time to reflect on what water means to you and how you can honor this element in your own life.
Intention Offering- Submitting your intentions to water is one of the most powerful practices I know. Water is a messenger that runs from the top of the mountains down through all of the land. It "talks" to the whole land. If you approach the waters in a heartfelt, sacred way the nature spirits will assist you.
Write your intentions on a piece of paper. Take time to reflect that these intents are in alignment with your higher self. For example, instead of writing "I intend to make more money", it might sound like "I intend to create and receive the resources I need to feel relaxed in my life in a happy, healthy way"
Take your intents to a place in nature with a body of water that feels soothing. Spend some time listening and connecting with the space. You can then offer the intentions to the water like a prayer. Either speaking your intentions or blowing on the paper towards the water to energetically submit it.
Make an offering of flowers or tobacco with sincere gratitude for all of life, embrace the feeling of abundance as if the intentions are already manifest. This can be done anytime, but consider dawn or dusk of the three days around the new moon for the most potency.
If you would like me to help facilitate an Intention Offering ceremony feel free to schedule a consultation!
Meditation for Inner Peace- Sat Narayan is a mantra that connects one with the water element and Vishnu, the deity associated with the water element. The mantra provides a sense of inner peace and gives gratitude for water. This can harmonize the water element in the body and spirit.
